Announcing a New Commission: A Choral Work for Trinity Sunday 2023

I am excited to announce that I have been commissioned to compose a new choral work for SATB and organ accompaniment, which will be premiered on Trinity Sunday 2023, June 4th at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Covina, CA. This will be my second commission as a composer, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with my friend and colleague Fr. Steve Demuth, the rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.

The text of the choral is based on a poem by Carrie Kahler entitled "After Rublev's Trinity," which was inspired by the famous icon by Andrei Rublev. Rublev was a 15th century Russian Orthodox monk and iconographer who is best known for his iconic depiction of the Holy Trinity.

The "Trinity" icon features three angelic figures seated around a table, each one facing the others, with a chalice in the center of the table. The figures are dressed in identical robes, representing their equality and unity, and each one holds a staff, symbolizing their authority. The chalice in the center represents the cup used during the Last Supper and the blood of Christ.

Kahler's poem takes inspiration from Rublev's depiction of the Holy Trinity and explores themes of inclusivity, hospitality, and compassion. The poem speaks to the idea of leaving a space at the table for others, providing an open door for those who need it, and reaching out a hand to those who are struggling. It emphasizes the importance of community and the interconnectedness of all people.

After Rublev’s Trinity

Each face turned toward
a face at table leaving
always a space for

one more. An open
door to run through when someone
can’t quite make it home

on their own. Though the
wings work, humans haven’t got
them, and it’s hard to

converse from heights so,
in one hand a staff to lean
on. The other hand
ever reaches down.

-Carrie Kahler

I am honored to have been given the opportunity to set Kahler's poem to music and bring it to life through choral performance. I invite all music lovers and those interested in spirituality and community to join us for the premiere of "After Rublev's Trinity" on the morning June 4th, 2023 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. It promises to be a moving and inspiring performance that will uplift and unite us all.

Kindly,

Garrett
