Tech Elevator Week 9: Settling Into Los Angeles
Hi, I'm Garrett and I’m attending a 14-week coding boot camp at Tech Elevator. As I write this, it’s Monday of week 9. Feel free to catch up on previous posts if you missed them!
Week 2: “Creativity Requires The Courage To Let Go Of Certainty”
Week 4: “Show Your Work!”
Week 5: “Y2K, The Unix Epoch, And Humans’ Millennia-long Struggle To Measure Time”
Portfolio Website
I’ve created a website to hold my coding portfolio! It’s still a work in progress, but feel free to check it out.
What I’ve Been Up To
The last two weeks have been jam-packed with studying and settling into my new home of Los Angeles.
Settling In
It’s been 3 full weeks since I’ve moved to Los Angeles. It’s been an interesting adjustment to start class at 9am Eastern Time, AKA 6am Pacific Time.
I actually like getting up really early and having a purpose each morning. Sometimes I even finish my academic day at Tech Elevator at noon if I get all my assignments complete.
However, I do find myself falling asleep around 8-9pm… I never thought I would ever go to sleep so early!
Today I went on an amazing hike at Sandstone Peak. At 3,111 feet, Sandstone Peak is the tallest point in the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail is a 6.25-mile loop with 1,075 feet of elevation gain with incredible views of the valley and ocean on either side.
I’d also like to share photos from the past few days.
Wrapping Up Module 2
Week 8 of Tech Elevator was especially busy because it was the Module 2 capstone project.
The capstone was to create a client-server application using Java Spring Boot to make REST APIs. This project solidified my understanding of the internet and I am excited to keep building.
Beginning Module 3
Week 9 was the beginning of Module 3. This module focuses on the front-end. This is basically whatever the end-user can actually see, not the stuff “under-the-hood”.
We kicked off by using HTML, CSS, Grid, and Flexbox to create websites with responsive designs.
Later in the module, we will also be applying JavaScript and Vue.js to add even more functionality.
Kicking Off The Job Search
The job search has officially begun! Once again, I am so appreciative of the entire team at Tech Elevator for their instruction and encouragement.
I am also looking forward to “Match-making”, an event that brings Tech Elevator students in front of employers who are specifically looking to hire Junior Developers from Tech Elevator.
Wish me luck as I continue down this exciting path!
Kindly,
Garrett
Real estate investment can feel like a mix of art and science. On one hand, it’s about understanding neighborhoods, negotiating deals, and having a vision for a property. On the other, data and technology can provide an edge that takes much of the guesswork out of the equation.
As a real estate investor and software engineer, I’ve found that combining traditional investing methods with tech tools can dramatically improve decision-making. Here’s how you can leverage data and technology to invest smarter and achieve better returns.
