From Junior to Mid-Level: My Journey at Re:Build Manufacturing
Three years ago, in February 2022, I began my journey at Re:Build Manufacturing as a junior software engineer. Unlike many in the field, I didn’t have a computer science degree. Instead, my formal training consisted of an intensive three-month boot camp at Tech Elevator. What I lacked in traditional credentials, I made up for with determination, curiosity, and a strong work ethic.
Over the past three years, I’ve worked as a full-stack engineer, building both front-end and back-end solutions. I’ve honed my skills in developing scalable, maintainable software, improving user experience, and implementing best practices in software design.
Building Real-World Solutions
At Re:Build Manufacturing, I’ve had the opportunity to work on impactful projects that bridge the gap between software and manufacturing. One of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on is a CAD-based software solution for CNC programming, which helps estimate machining and programming time for manufacturing operations. This tool also calculates material usage and determines the best matching path for optimized efficiency. By developing this software, we have improved precision, reduced waste, and streamlined manufacturing workflows.
These experiences have not only enhanced my technical expertise but have also deepened my understanding of how software can transform manufacturing operations. The intersection of technology and industry has been fascinating, and I’ve learned how to navigate complex systems, integrate with existing infrastructures, and optimize workflows for real-world production environments.
The Re:Build Manufacturing Story
Re:Build Manufacturing is not just another private equity-backed company looking for short-term gains. Instead of acquiring companies to roll them up and sell them, Re:Build focuses on long-term investment in manufacturing to restore American technological leadership. The company has secured private funding from the MIT endowment and is led by Chairman Jeff Wilke, formerly of Amazon. Through strategic acquisitions, Re:Build is committed to revitalizing domestic manufacturing and ensuring that cutting-edge technology remains a core strength of the U.S. economy.
Growth Beyond Code
Beyond technical skills, transitioning from junior to mid-level required me to develop a broader set of professional competencies. One of the biggest challenges was balancing the desire to figure things out independently with knowing when to ask for help. It’s important to put in the effort to grow, but sometimes seeking guidance from those who already have the answers can save valuable time.
Navigating the corporate world—especially coming from a background in music—was an adjustment. I had to learn how to advocate for myself, communicate effectively across teams, and contribute strategically to company goals. Fortunately, I’ve been able to bring my discipline from music into engineering, using structured thinking and creative problem-solving to tackle complex challenges.
Despite this shift, I’ve never left music behind. I continue to serve as the Music Director and Organist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Covina, CA, working with a fabulous choir and maintaining my passion for the arts. Balancing both worlds has been a challenge, but it’s also been incredibly fulfilling.
Looking Forward
Reaching mid-level is a milestone, but I see it as just the beginning. I hope to progress toward a senior engineer role and beyond, where I can make bigger impacts through software architecture, mentoring other engineers, and taking on larger initiatives. I’m eager to continue growing, learning, and contributing to Re:Build’s mission of innovating manufacturing through technology. With the company’s recent growth and funding, there are exciting opportunities on the horizon, and I’m looking forward to tackling new challenges and making an even greater impact.
For anyone looking to break into tech—especially those without a traditional background—I hope my journey serves as a reminder that persistence, passion, and a willingness to learn can open doors. Things do get easier over time, and we’re all still early in our careers. Keep pushing forward, and here’s to the next chapter!
