I Had A Great Vacation In The Mountains Of North Carolina

Whew, 2020 has been a wild ride so far. Now that it is summertime, I’ve been able to spend a few days relaxing in the mountains of North Carolina. I went on a few hikes near Asheville and made a short film of the vacation. Highlights include:

  • Catawba Falls - This was an absolutely stunning water fall! The hike wasn’t too long and was relatively flat compared to most hikes in the area.

  • Lookout Mountain - The trail to Lookout Mountain begins near the campus of Montreat College. It is a moderate/challenging hike but the views are worth it.

  • Chimney Rock State Park - Talk about stair city… When I went the upper parking lot was closed so it was a hike just to get to the stairs. It’s about 500 stairs up to the top Chimney Rock, the main event. But the Hickory Nut Falls is not too far. There is also the opera box and several other look out points. This is a great option for those looking for a work out with many great sights in one location.

  • Black Mountain - Has a charming downtown area. I would recommend The Dripolator, which is a charming cafe; Dairy King, a family owned ice cream shop; and My Father’s Pizza, for a delicious dinner.

  • Mount Mitchell - The highest point of elevation East of the Mississippi River! Most people drive to a parking lot only a quarter of a mile away from the pinnacle. I took a two mile hike on the forested trail. I would highly recommend the hike.
